The article describes three competing theories to explain the purpose of Choco structure. However, the professor says that none of the theories presented in the article is believable and refutes each of the author's reasons by questioning the authenticity of each theory.
First, reading claims that primary purpose of Choco structures was residential since it has enough room to support hundreds of people. However, the professor refutes this point by saying that if there were hundreds of individuals living in this house, then there should have been large number of fire cooking spots. He states that only few fire cooking places have been discovered and in addition to this, in one of the biggest houses, there are enough rooms to support more than hundred families but has only ten fire cooking places. Hence, primary purpose of this structure could not be residential.
Second, the article posits that food supplies like grain maize were preserved in Choco structures. However, the professor says that this idea is unsupported. According to professor if maize were stored in these houses then why aren't there any containers that used to store maize or why there is no maize spilled over ground. Thus absence of containers question the validity of second theory.
Third, the article says that Choco structures were used as ceremony centers. The professor opposes this point by explaining that evidences are not enough to prove that these houses were used for ceremonies. He states that, even though, pile of old materials discovered in Choco structures, excavations of the mound contain materials that are not used in ceremonies. For example, materials like sand and other construction tools. In additon to this, pots found in this place could be used by construction employees. Thus, presence of old materials and pots are not enough to conclude the third hypothesis.
