In the passage, the author cites three reasons against the idea that Sinosauropteryx had feather based on a fossil skeleton, while the lecturer in the lecture expresses an opposite view.

To begin with, the critics claim that the fine lines surrounding the bones were formed after the animal’s death. However, the lecturer rebuts that it is unlikely a later result, because scientists did not discover this kind of lines in other animals that were found in the same site. It makes no sense that the decomposition of skin fibers happened only on the single dinosaur fossil. In fact, most fossil remains there were beautifully preserved, which ensures an ideal condition for the dinosaur’s structures, i.e. its feather, to be reserved for a long period.

Moreover, the critics believe that rather than being remains of feathers, the fine lines are more likely to be a part of frills. On the contrary, the lecturer refutes that scientists cannot mistake these two structures since they have a markable difference: chemical composition. Feather consists of a special type of protean that cannot be found in frills, and the fossil evidence suggests that it contains such protean. Therefore, we can draw a conclusion that the fine lines must belong to feather remains.

Finally, the critics put forward that the structures represented by the lines have little use for flight or temperature regulation, which are key functions of feathers. Instead, the lecturer retorts that there are other equally important purposes. For example, peacock has long colorful feathers all over its tale served to attract females in mating seasons. This indicates that animals often use feathers to display themselves, and similarly, Sinosauropteryx also shows such rich colors – feathers in orange and white. Thus, the lecturer’s opinion is strongly supported.
