The pie charts compare the proportion of students of British nationality at one university in England who, apart from English, could speak other languages in 2000 and 2010.
Overall, the percentage of learners who were able to speak at least one language rose, as well as the rate of those who could communicate in more than one foreign language.
Looking at the year 2000, those who spoke only in their native language represented a fifth. 70% of the students were bilingual, with Spanish, at 30%, being by far the most popular linguistic choice. German and French accounted for 10% and 15% respectively, whereas 15% spoke in a language different from those analyzed. Students who knew more than one foreign language constituted a tenth of the sample.
Turning to 2010, the number of students who only spoke English decreased by half, and reached 10%. Those who knew several foreign languages witnessed a rise, with the rate achieving 15%. Spanish remained the most popular language of choice, at 35%, followed by French and German, each at 10%.
