Both the reading and the lecture are both about the origin of the “comics medium”, which includes comic strips and comic books such as spider-man. The passage believes that comics come purely from American origins. The lecturer brings into questions the claims made by the author of the passage. He thinks that comics come from all around the world.
First, the author stablishes that the first succesful comic strip, “Hogan’s Alley”, was a true work of Americans. It is mentioned that it depicted the life of a typical American family and it was also writtend by a cartoonist of the same country. However, the professor argues that there were succesful comics before, in Europe. And even further, he explains that “Hogan’s Alley” depicted the life of inmmigrants, and Its author was an immigrant too.
Second, the author states that the first popular comic book was also American. The article notes that “Superman” was the world first superhero and of course, it had American creators. Meanwhile, the professor rebuts this argument by pointing out that there was other superhero long before Superman. “Tin tin” is considered to be the first superhero by experts and it predates american comic books by 60 years. The lecturer also higlights that Superman’s artist was Canadian.
Finally, The author contends that, generally, all cartoons are influenced by strips made in the US. In this manner, japanese Manga was influenced by US comics, while European cartoons were influenced by Disney comic books. The professor on the other hand, posits that this is not the case at all. He points out that Manga comes from traditional Asian arts while Disney work is actually based on European stories and stlyes.
