The reading and the lecture are both about declining sea otter in the western coast on the United States of America, which has important role in the ecosystem. While the passage suggests that the cause may be environmental pollution and provides three reasons of supports, the article casts doubt on all claims made in the passage by saying that investigation approved that predation is most likely the main cause.
First of all, the article mentions that water samples had showed out high levels of chemicals like oil, which might decrease the sea otter's resistance to any infection. However, the lecturer explains that environmental pollution theory weakened when dead sea otter was found near coastal beach. Furthermore, she puts forth the idea that if the reason was predation, they might not be able to find any dead body, because it would not wash out to the shore.
Second, the author states that there are also other mammals such as sea lions and seal were declined due to environmental pollution, which affects the entirely ecosystem and not specific species. The professor, on the other side, says that other mammals declined as a result of increased human hunting to whales, which represent essential meal to Orca. Consequently, orca started to look for alternative, which are other mammals like sea lions and seals.
Third, the writer claims that the fluctuation pattern of otter decline could be explained by environmental factors that could create different concentration of pollutants. Conversely, the lecturer illustrates this theory by explaining that the pattern is related to predation theory more than environmental pollution. She elaborates on this by mentioning this pattern depends on the locations, which orcas could access. It was found sea otters declined in places where orcas live, Although, sea otters did not decline in shallow water, where orcas have no access to it.
