The article suggests three hypotheses about the migration of Edmontasaurus during wintertime from Alaska's North slope towards south. However, the professor refutes all hypotheses made by the author. The lecturer says that all these hypotheses are unconvincing.
The first hypothesis states that the Edmontosaur could have been looked for food. Because of the cold and the darkness of this area, there would not have been growing plants. Conversely, The professor claims that edmontosaur have not needed to migrate because the weather was warm in the summer and the sunshine was twenty four hours a day. This led to growth of good plants. She also argues that even if those plants were died at winter, the edmontosaur could have survived on dead plants.
The second hypothesis is when many edmontosaru skeletons have been disocered from the same site, which concludes that edmontosaru have lived in herds, and this supports migration hypothesis. The lecturer , on the other hand, opposes this hypothesis by mentioning that founding them in herds does not mean they have migrated. The professor adds that there are many reasons for being in herds like extra protection from predators. For example the elk who was a large plant eater were found in herds and never migrated.
The last hypothesis for the author suggests that edmonosaurs were able to migrate for long distance, as they could have moved for several weeks with five kilometers per hour as a speed. However, the professor challenges this point by illustrating that juveniles could not have such physical capability like adults edmonosaurs, which could slow down herd. The juveniles could not have depended on their own and in the same time adult edmonosaurs could not leave them alone, and they would have stayed where the juveniles are.
