To deal with the problem that wild birds suffer injuries due to flying through glass windows, the passage proposes three solutions, namely, using one-way glass, painting stripes over the glass, and equipped with magnets. Unfortunately, the lecturer indicates that these methods are ineffective.
First, the passage contends that the one-way glass has only one side through which light can pass, so the birds will avoid the barrier-like object. On the contrary, the professor argues that the untransparent side of the one-way glass is like a mirror, which cannot be understood by birds. As a result, the birds will believe in what they can see in the mirror, like the sky or the trees, and still, fly through the glass.
Furthermore, according to the passage, decorations like colorful stripes can prevent birds from passing through the glass. This claim is refuted by the lecturer, which suggests that birds will regard the area that is not covered by the paintings as holes that they can fly through. Besides, minimizing the unpainted area is impractical neither because it will lead to lack of indoor luminosity.
Moreover, the passage holds that humans can solve this problem by emitting magnetic signals, which force the birds to change their directions. By contrast, the professor in the lecture contradicts this idea by pointing out that birds only leverage magnetic compass to navigate during a long-distance flight, such as a seasonal migration from cold places to somewhere warm. In fact, when they fly in urban areas, they depend on the brightness of the light. So they are unlikely to be affected by those equipments.
In short, the professor asserts that all these solutions presented by the passage are infeasible.
