TPO-01 - Integrated Writing Task In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so.
The passage illustrates the benefits of a four- day week job trough three reasons that the lecturer contradicts.
First, the passage indicates that promoting an 80 percent job for employees would improve their comfort and well-being at work which would increase workers’ productivity and therefore profits of the company. However, hiring new employees to compensate the missing work has a cost on companies as the lecturer maintains because they will have to spend money on training and office supplies as computers.
Secondly, the passage shows a benefit for the country as this shortened workweek allows to reduce unemployment in the country thanks to companies hiring more workers. Nevertheless, the lecturer qualifies this theory as companies will tend towards more expectations towards their four-day week employees and therefore, no more jobs will be created. The lecturer goes further indicating that four-day workers could even lose their job because their job ability would be reduced and consequently, companies will be more afraid of promoting them and they would be the first to be fired in case of an economic plan.
Finally, the passage put the emphasize on the enhanced quality of life of workers adopting this schedule: they can spend more time with their family and chasing their personal interests. However, the lecturer contradicts the passage presenting different risks about this work model: employees earn less money and consequently, it alleviates their quality of life.
