The reading passage and the lecture discuss the portrait of Jane Austin, a famous English novelist. The author of the passage claims that the girl in the portrait is Jane Austene and gives three supporting reasons. However, the speaker says those details are not convincing to believe and gives more details about the portrait.
Firstly, the reading claims that Austene's family gave permission to use the portrait in her letter editions as an example after her death. This implies that her family accepted the girl in the portrait as Austene. In contrast, the speaker says her family authorized to use the portrait after 70 years of her death. This family had never seen or known about the Austene, asserts the speaker.
Secondly, the reading passage says that the portrait is similar to Cassandra's sketch of adult Austene. The facial features of Cassandra's sketch are similar to the one in the portrait which shows the teenage Austene. However, the professor argues that facts would explain the subject and Cassandra's sketch. The portrait might be Austene's cousins or their children of her extended family who might resemble her.
Thirdly, the reading passage says that the painter, Ozias Hymphrey was active in the period when Austene was a teenager. The author also says he was hired by Austene family as a professional painter and hence the girl in the portrait must be Austene when she was a teenager. On the contrary, the speaker contradicts by saying that the painter might be Ozias due to his style same as the portrait. He says that the stamp on the back side of the portrait shows a black canvas and it was probably sold by William. Records show that the canvas was sold when Austene was 27 years and hence there was no chance of it selling when she was a teenager.
Because of the above reasons, the speaker disagrees to the author's claims that the portrait depicts young Austene.
