The reading passage describes one of the Rembrandt’s paintings and the author expressed doubts on the authenticity as it does not resemble and depict Rembrandt’s style. However, the professor in the lecture clarified those doubts by saying suitable points.
Firstly, the passage casts doubts on the painting by pointing out the dressing style of the woman. As per passage, the woman’s coat has a luxurious fur collar which cannot be afforded by any servant thus questioned the inconsistency. To this, the professor explained that the fur was not part of the original paintings and it is confirmed by the X-ray reports. She said someone might have added the fur to increase the value of the painting.
Secondly, the reading passage states that the lighting in the painting is not proper as it shows the face of the lady is illuminated and the fur appeared dark which is not a typical Rembrandt’s style. However, the professor explains that the lighting part represents Rembrandt’s style. She says that if the fur is removed then the light collar will appear illuminated and there is proper light and shadow in the painting as expected in Rembrandt’s paintings.
Thirdly, the passage doubts this painting because it is made of several wood pieces glued together, whereas all Rembrandt’s paintings are done on single piece of wood. The professor says that there is no need to doubt on this because they are glued to make it more grand and valuable. She also says that the original painting was done on a single piece of wood as expected in any other Rembrandt’s style.
Thus the professor clarified the doubts in reading passage and asserts that the painting is indeed a creation of Rembrandt’s.
