In recent years, many small local shops have closed because customers travel to large shopping centres or malls to do their shopping. Is this a positive development or a negative development?
Boom in supermarkets has significantly changed the customer's tendency to choose their shopping places. As a result, number of low scale local businesses have shut down. This phenomena brings both positive and negative aspects and this essay will analyse both aspects with examples to present a conclusion.
Firstly, rapid growth in shopping malls results in economic growth of the society. For example, property prices and value go high if there is a supermarket in vicinity of that area. Moreover, supermarkets opens the door of employment for certain group of people. For example, security guards, cashiers, customer care executives etc. Secondly, from customer perspective, malls are time saving and convenient places to purchase their daily household items under one roof. These stores offer plenty of facilities for the ease of their customers. For instance, car parking service, kids care section so that parents can freely buy, discounts and sales to save their money. Not only this, customers can rely on the brand value and quality of the products they purchase. Customer support services provided by these stores is highly appreciable. By considering aforementioned facts, supermarkets certainly have positive aspects in many ways.
On the flip side, If we look at local vendors' perspective then these shopping centers have affected their business and popularity. Eventually, sale of local businessmen have reduced significantly. However, I think that by offering facilities like home delivery, value pack purchasing, small shops can gain their popularity back among customers and can compete against supermarkets at some extent.
By hammering the final nail, I pen down by saying that though local vendors have been suffered with the expansion of shopping malls, the positive developments these large places offer can not be ignored. Since there are possible ways for small businessmen to come back in market and beat supermarkets in some extent. So, benefits of shopping malls certainly overweigh their negative impacts.
