The main idea of both the passage and the lecture is about possibility of traveling to Mars for mankind. In this line of thought, according to the passage, there are three possible difficulties which make round-trip to Mars impossible for human being, by disapproving them one by one, the professor states that although the trip to Mars is definitely challenging, some scientists, however, have suggested some solutions. Accordingly, the lecturer provides three plausible solutions for the mentioned argument episodes in the passage.
First, both the reading and the listening materials talk about providing needed supplies for astronauts in the prolonged trip to Mars. In this vein, the author posits that providing supplies of food, water and oxygen for a long period as long as two years is one of the hardships that astronauts are facing. On contrary, the speaker opposes this by introducing a solution namely hydroponic planting technique. To more clarification, she states that astronauts can use the new method to plant their required crops there at the spaceship which will demands relatively little space. Additionally, the plants produce oxygen in photosynthesis process which meets the needs of astronauts for fresh air. Also, recycling the waste water will prepare fresh water in the spaceship.
Second, both the text and the talk discuss the probable effects of zero-gravity on the spacemen. Having this in mind, the text asserts that spending an extended time in zero gravity state affects the people, adversely. While the speaker opposed the declaration by demonstrating that several spaceships have been lunched before and astronauts have experienced the zero-gravity many times. As a result, they have learned some techniques to overcome the side effects of the zero-gravity. Doing exercises, they improve their muscles and also taking vitamins enhances their bones density.
Eventually, both the passage and the lecture discuss the idea of solar radiance effects on the spacemen. The passage claims that being exposed to the space radiation can have harmful effects on the individual’s bodies. Conversely, the lecturer refutes the assertion by illustrating that sun radiation will not cause dangers for the astronauts. Clarifying it, the radiation is just occasionally and does not last for a long time. Consequently, if the spaceship was equipped with a monitoring system, detection of the time of radiation will be possible. Having a small shelter on the spaceship can prevent the people from exposing radiation as the time. They can stay safely there shielded until the radiation decreases.
