To begin with, on the premise of given time period in terms of the proportion of the old the USA ranked first being marginally ahead of Sweden (9% vs. 7%) and they were followed by Japan (5%). From that time on until the beginning of new millennium, although both the USA and Sweden experienced upward trend on this issue, Sweden outrun the USA indicating a rise by 8% opposed to 5%. On the contrary, the figures for old people stayed at its initial level after some fluctuations in Japan.

When it comes to predictions, until 2030, all countries are expected to show climb, but then the amount of elderly people are forecasted to rocket in Japan taking her slightly ahead of her counterparts in 2040, when in all three countries the figures are anticipated to hit their peaks.

Overall, despite the fact that initially the USA has the greatest proportion of the elderly and Japan had the smallest one, those countries are foreseen to exchange their rankings at the end of shown time span.
