The reading passage presents three reasons to debunk that bees were existed on earth as early as 200 million syears ago. But the professor in the lecture support the idea of existence of bees since that time.
First, the reading contends that there is no fossil record of bees that date to 200 million years ago. By contrast, the professor argues that even though there no fossil record of bees, it does not mean they did not exist at that time. In fact, the remants of bees could not be preserved in the environment. The specific kinds of trees which typically host bees were so rare at that time and after the trees became abundant, bees coud fossilize in the environment.
Second, the reading contends that since there was no flowering plant 200 million years ago, the existence of bees is doubtful. On the contrary, the professor believes that bees fed on non-flowering plants at that time and the adaptation of feeding on flowering plant later evolved in bees. So, it proves that bees existed in the mentioned time.
Third, the reading believes that since structure of nest chambers are similar to modern bees, such as spiral pattern of caps, there was no bees at such an old time. However, the professor believes that although the early bees did not the structures, they may have water proof structures in their nest, just as the modern bees do have.
