Feathers in Sinosauropteryx
The author states the opposed reasons that Sinosauropteryx was a feathered dinosaur. As opposed to. the lecturer who counters- argues that viewpoint trying to prove that these three reasons do not seem convincing.
First and foremost, the writer mentions that the fine lines may not represent functional structures of a living dinosaur, but rather structures that were formed after animal's death. After the animal died and was buried in volcanic ash, the skin may have decomposed into fibers, Therefore, the fibers became preserved as lines in the fossil. On the contrary, the lecturer cannot disagree more, reasoning that these fibers are not seen in other animals fossils. Consequently, we must say that skin structure have beautifully preserved and it is possible that those are feathers.
The second argument the author gives is that the scientists cannot tell with certainty in what part of the dinosaur's anatomy the structures were. So, maybe they had frills rather than feathers. However, the professor cannot be more outraged, explaining that frills and feathers are very different chemically. Scientists have found that these fossils contain Beta carotene which means that the structure of Sinosauropteryx did contain feathers.
lastly, on one hand, the passage points out that feathers supposed to help animals to fly or regulate their internal temperature. However, these structures represented by the lines in the fossils were mostly located along the backbone and the tail of the animals. Therefore, the structures would have been useless. Nevertheless, the lecturer declares that a lot of animals use their feathers for other reasons, such as Picoks use their tails that is with colorful feather to attract their mats. Apart from that, analyzing he structure they have found colored bones which strongly support the idea that those structures were colored feathers.
