venus is an inhospitable place for we human being to live permanently
The reading passage is discussing the possibility of settling on Venus, the professor is also investigating the same issue, however, what the professor contradicts with the statement in the article. He reckons that it is plausible to maintain a permanent human presence on Venus as long as we set a float in the atmosphere, like a balloon, which is 50 kilometers upper the surface and he utilizes three convincing arguments to underpin his point.
To start with, the reading passage suggests that owing to the extreme pressure at Venus's surface, not only the spacecraft but also humans landed on Venus would be crushed within an hour, however, the professor states that provided that the station we establish is high enough, the pressure there can be lowered to the pressure equal to the pressure in earth's surface, therefore individuals are capable of avoiding suffering from extreme pressure.
What's more, despite the assertion in the reading passage that there are no reservoirs of water and oxygen on Venus's surface and atmosphere and it is impractical to transport water and oxygen from earth, the professor contends that with the compound existing in the atmosphere, especially the sulfuric acid and carbon dioxide, water and oxygen can be easily produced through a series of chemical reactions, hence, it is not necessary to import supplement from earth to Venus.
Finally, the author of the reading passage indicates that due to the thick clouds and the dense layer of carbon dioxide, most of the sunlight cannot reach the surface, thus solar power cells fail to utilize solar energy to generate electricity for humans to power their equipment, whereas the professor rebuts that since the station is erected in the atmosphere upper the surface, the clouds there are not thick compared to the surface. Meanwhile, the station can also make use of the sunlight reflected by the layer of carbon dioxide, therefore utilizing both the direct and reflected sunlight, more electricity can be produced to supply humans' equipment.
In a nutshell, the professor convincingly pinpoints the weaknesses existing in the reading article and verifies that it is plausible for we human beings to live in Venus permanently as long as we establish the station in the atmosphere of Venus.
