The bar chart illustrates the proportion of household in both cases owning and renting accommodation in the countries of England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, it is clear that households in owned accommodation experienced an upward trend, while households in rented accommodation showed a downward trend throughout the period. The own houses initially had a lower rate than rented and overstepped them in 1981.
Looking at the diagram, we can see that the households owning accommodation were about 25% in 1918, is lower than rented houses by approximately 50%. Then, it gradually rose to almost 70% in the year 2001 and slightly declined at the end of the period.
In comparison to own houses, the percentage of the households in rented accommodation was less than 80% in 1918, and it significantly decreased until one-third of households in 2001. However, the figure showed a gentle growth during the next 10 years. At the end of the period, people had accommodation in rented houses two times less than in the own houses, 35% and 65% respectively.
