In term of whether pterosaurs which were an ancient group of winged reptiles could power flight or not the article and the lecturer contradict each other. The author in the reading states some arguments that they could not fly, on the other hand, the professor in the lecture refute these claims and states that some new research reveals that these kinds of animal could power flight.
Firstly, the author asserts that ancient reptiles such as pterosaurs were probably cold-blooded like modern reptiles, therefore, they had a slow metabolism and were unable to produce a lot of energy consequently, they could not fly on contrast, the professor refute this concept and states that some recent research discover that pterosaurs had dense hairy cover of fur like warm-blooded animals. Hence they could make their body temperature in the high rate and produced a lot of energy consequently, they could powered flight.
Secondly, the writer contends that Pterosaurs were very big, large and heavy. As a result, they could not flap their wings very fast. On the contrary, the speaker rebuts this claim and says that we know the anatomy of this creature is unique. For example, they had hollow bones which help them to flap their wings very easily. So, this is not a convincing argument.
Finally, the reading asserts that powered flight animals can take off from the ground and jump like birds. But, the pterosaurs due to large heavy bodies needed big powerful legs which the fossilized bones from these animals revealed that their back leg muscles were too small and weak. However, the professor disclaims this idea and claims that Pterosaurs were different from birds because birds have two limbs on the ground but, the pterosaurs had four limbs. Thus, these limbs help them to jump and they had not any trouble to take off from the ground.
In the nutshell, according to the aforementioned reasons, the professor rebuts all arguments which stated with the author and maintain the opposite ideas toward the article.
