The diagrams below show the life cycle of the silkworm and the stages in the production of silk cloth.

The diagrams represent the birth of a silk worm and the stages in creation of silk cloth. They are shown together because of the inter connection between the two processes, that is caused due to the dependence of man on one insect for a piece of silk fabric.

Overall, it is clear the natural process is more time consuming in comparison with the artificial one. It takes over a month and half for the egg to manifest into a cocoon, while a cocoon can be transformed into thread rather instantaneously.

Initially, the moth lays its eggs, these hatch and become larvae. The gestation period for this is about ten days. Afterwards, the larvae feed on mulberry leaves for about two to three fortnights. They fatten up and develop an outer cover , this is possibly the source of silk. Similar, to a tortoise with an outer cover, and popping heads, the larvae are wrapped in this silk thread. But this is not the case forever, as they get completely engulfed by this thread within three to eight days.

Now no longer a mobile creature, the young ones morph into a shell like thing. This is usually referred to as the 'cocoon phase'. It stays so for about sixteen days before transitioning to a full grown moth. Of all the forms of the worm, this phase is quintessential for producing silk thread.

Rest of silk production is rather simple, all that happens is picking the right sized cocoon, boiling it in water till it reaches the prescribed temperature and unwinding the thread. Its length is dependent upon the size of its source ranging from three hundred to nine hundred metres. After being so extracted, it is twisted and turned for gaining some girth. Later on , it is dyed and woven for making silk garments.
