The chart illustrates the proportion of both boys and girls who took part in various sports in New Zealand in 2002.
Overall, there were significant differences between boys and girls in most sports while the percentage of participants in basketball and tennis was similar.
Among girls, the most popular sport was netball, with 25% played, and a slightly lower percentage - 22% - played swimming. Approximately 7% and 6% enjoyed tennis and basketball, which had slightly lower than boys in both sports. While 5% played soccer and 4% played athletics, less than 3% took part in martial arts and cricket. Finally, 10% of girls participated in unspecified sports.
In contrast, among boys, the sports with the highest percentage were soccer, swimming and cricket with 24%, 13% and 11% respectively. There were followed by cricket, martial arts, tennis and basketball, which had the figures between 8% and 11%. The participation figure in other sports was only 18%.
