shortened work week
The reading and the lecture are both about reducing workweek to 4 days, offered to employees for 80% of their normal salary. The author believes that shortened workweek can benefit companies and employees. The lecturer challenges these claims made by author. He is of the opinion that none of these views is correct.
First, the author contends that decreased work days and hiring new employee to make up the same amount of works, improves the company's benefits. This argument is refuted by the lecturer. He states that adding new staffs requires companies to spend more money for medical benefits that is as the amount as for five days workers. In addition, it needs more work spaces and computers for additional workers.
Secondly, the writer of the reading states that shortened work weeks decrease the unemployment rate. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by asserting that since hiring new workers is costly so, companies would raise their expectation from current employees to work more over shortened timework as the normal five days employees do. He points out that in this way conversely the unemployment rate is increased also, the current jobs would be unpleasant.
Finally, it is stated in the article that it would be better for four days employee to have more time for their personal life. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that it would harms their chances for advancing in their career. Moreover they will be first employees will fire in financial depression so that they will not have job stability.
