TOEFL integrated writing: Chevalier de Seingalt
The article claims that some critics had doubts about the accuracy of the Chevalier's memoir. Furthermore, they explain their claims
by providing three reasons for support. However, the lecturer explains that the accuracy of chevalier's memoir is correct and refutes each of the three reasons pointed out by the critics.
Firstly, the critics posit that if Chevaliar was a wealthy man and had spent more money on parties and gambling then what was the need to borrow money from
a Swiss merchant. The lecturer explains this by saying that Chevalier would've been in the need for urgent money and it does take a while to sell his assets and get the money, whereby he had no option but to take a loan. But, this doesn't mean that he wasn't wealthy.
Secondly, the critics doubt the accuracy of the conversation between Chevalier and Voltaire. They also feel that since memoir was written several years back, it's quite difficult to trust the accuracy of the actual conversation. However, the lecturer refutes this by saying that Chevalier used to write down everything about the conversation on the same day and also kept the notes for several years thereby referring it while writing the memoir. Additionally, she says that many people during Chevalier's era agreed on this.
Thirdly, the critics asserts that Chevalier's escape from Venetian prison by using a piece of metal to make a hole in
the ceiling and climbing through the roof didn't sound genuine because they feel that he could've bribed the prisoners
and escaped instead since he had a number of well-connected friends from Venice who could've paid the bribe. In contrast to this, the lecturer says that there were many people in prison who had more influential friends if that's the case why couldn't they escape. Furthermore, sources from old Venetian people reveal that the prison's ceiling had to be repaired.
