Ways to prevent birds' injuries because of glass window
The article and the lecture are both about the solutions to prevents birds from flying through glass windows. The author of the reading proposes three solutions to prevent these injuries. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes the statements made by the author. He is of the opinion that none of the resolutions are effective.
First of all, the author suggests to change regular glass to one way glass, which allows people inside the building to see through but the outside people and birds. This is challenged by the speaker. He says that the problem with one way glass is its outside surface reflects like a mirror, which is bad for birds as well. As they do not understand mirrors, they would consider the image reflected as real and still get hurt. The lecturer mentions the instance that if birds see sky and trees in the mirror, they would regard them as real and fly right into them
Second, the writer puts forth the idea of painting color lines or stripes on the glass so that the birds could see and avoid the window. However, the speaker rebuts this point by asserting that while these patterns are apparent to the birds, they would think of the transparent glass as open holes and try to fly through them. As a result, people have to make these unpainted fields extremely small, which would make the rooms the building inside too dark.
Finally, it is stated in the passage that a man-made magnetic field should be established to steer birds' flight direction. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that this method would not work well since birds only use magnet indicators to navigate when travelling long distance, for example, migrating from cold countries to hot ones before winter. He elaborates on this by mention that for short-distance flight such as from one side of the city to the other, they would only use their eyes and the brightness of light. Consequently, this effort would not be very much effective.
