whats the advantages and the disadvantages of converting the working days from five to four?
The lecturer and the reading passage both discuss an issue about the companies which want to convert the full-time job from five days to four days per week with reducing the salary to 80%from the current.
The reading states that this good idea to apply and finds it successful for both the worker and the firm. The lecture refutes this saying that it is a nonfunctional idea.
First of all, the reading claims that the four days of working will increase the profits by many ways like keeping the employees rested and alert so their quality improves as well as the errors decrease, and the firm will get more stuff with the budget, the higher numbers lead to fewer mistakes. However, the professor states that this idea will force the company to spend more money on getting new workers by paying extra cost on the training session and medical benefits. Also, they should provide more computers and offices.
In addition, the reading makes the argument that this will reduce the unemployment rates because the workload will be shifted to others. According to the professor, many companies will find that hiring new worker costly, so they will ask the same people to work overtime or that four days will be adequate to deliver the work, this means no additional jobs created.
Lastly, the reading passage argues that the four days will make the worker feels better because they are going to have more leisure time, so their submitted works will have high quality. The professor states that this has risks on worker such as reducing the quality of them, decreasing the job stability and harm their advance career. In addition, they may lose the job by the downtime as well as this hardens the management process on the supervisors.
