Both the author of the reading and the lecturer discuss if Robert E. Peary, a well-known adventurer and explorer, reached the North Pole. Whereas the author believes that Peary succeeded on that trip and provides three arguments of support, the professor, however, finds those arguments unconvincing and rejects each of them.
One argument claimed in the passage is that Peary's records found persuasive and convincing by a committee gathered by the National Geographic Society. The lecturer, however, has some doubts about the objectivity of the committee. He states that investigation was conducted by some close friends of Peary and it lasted 2 days, which were a relatively short time. Thus, the investigation was biased.
According to the article, another explorer Tom Avery made a similar trip with the same conditions with that of Peary's trip and, he reached the North Pole less than 37 days. the speaker, on the other hand, draws attention to the point that Avery's trip was not the same because he did not carry as much weight as Peary on the dogsleds. His food was carried by airplane and most importantly, weather conditions were better than the time Peary made the trip.
It is also contended in the passage that the position of the Sun and its shade on photos taken by Peary was suitable according to some calculations. However, the professor cast doubt on this point by claiming that many years past and photos have become old. Now, they look fuzzy and shaded so, we cannot measure the position of the Sun exactly.
