TPO40 integrated writing
The reading and listening materials have a debate on the availability to maintain a human presence on Venus. The writer believes that it is impossible for people to permanently live there, which is contradicted by the following lecture. The professor proposes that people can establish a station floating at the Venus’ atmosphere 55 kilometers above the surface like a balloon.
Firstly, the writer claims that the extreme atmospheric pressure at Venus' surface will crush everything humans land on it. However, the speaker points out that the pressure at the 55 kilometers height above the surface is much lower than it at the surface, equal with the atmospheric pressure on Earth. As a result, people are enabled to avoid the danger of getting crushed.
Secondly, the author states that the absence of water and oxygen makes it impractical to establish a permanent station on Venus, while the lecture views this issue from an opposite angle. According to the professor, people can take advantages of the existence of compounds such as carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid to make oxygen and water. They can be produced through chemical process by those chemical materials which can be easily obtained on Venus. Therefore, the import of oxygen and water from Earth is not necessary.
Thirdly, the passage argues that people are not able to settle on Venus permanently due to the block and reflection of sunlight by thick clouds. On the contrary, in accordance with the professor, this claim does not hold water. It is because the cloud is not quite thick at 55 kilometers height despite of a few presence. Correspondingly, there will be considerable amount of sunlight filtering through. Besides, the reflected light can also be utilized, so the solar-powered cell can collect the solar energy both above and below the clouds. Consequently, more than enough electricity can be generated to power the station.
To sum up, the author's statements are totally refuted by the professor, and whether Venus can support human settlement is still under heated discussion.
