A recent study reveals that people, especially young people, are reading far less literature—novels, plays, and poems—than they used to. This is troubling because the trend has unfortunate effects for the reading public, for culture in general, and for the future of literature itself.
The reading passage and the lecture are about the decline of reading literature and how that causes negative effects on public reading and the culture in genera. The article states three arguments to sustain this topic. On the other hand, the lecturer casts doubts on these arguments and gives her opinion to disprove the claims made by the article.
First of all, according to the reading besides literature, nothing else encourages exercising our imagination, and can offer the same level of intellectual stimulation. However, the lecturer disputes this point by saying that reading books about sciences, political analysis and so on can also stimulate our creativity. Not only literature does.
Secondly, the reading states that today self-help books are considered best sellers and this kind of book s are poorly written and intellectually non demanding. Also, the article states that people prefer some trivial forms of entertainment such as watching television instead of read a book. Nevertheless, the professor refutes this argument by saying that culture has changed and it can be found in many different forms of expressions. She argues that music, movies and arts are also valuable cultural material. Not only literature is.
Finally, the reading claims that nowadays good literature has being written, but there is lack of audience resulting in less investment in literature by the lead publishers. On the other hand, the professor blames the authors instead of the poor standards readers. Suggesting that, modern literature is difficult to understand.
