Franchise x Independent Business
The reading passage and the lecture have conflicting opinions about buying a franchise or start an independent business. The article presumes that, a franchise is more secure and it requires less initial investment. On the other hand, the professor casts doubts on what is presented on the text and believes that buying a franchise has no better advantages than start a new business.
First of all, according to the reading the franchisers does not have to face the problem of finding a reliable suppliers, because franchise contract specified their own partners suppliers. However, the lecturer disputes this point by saying that franchise owners are forced to buy specific products and services from their partner suppliers. This type of contract dos not allow the franchisers to look better or any cheaper commodity.
Secondly, the reading states that franchisers gets the benefits of sophisticated and expensive advertising paid by parent company. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument by saying that the parent company actually advertise their own brands and products, not the franchisers specific business site. Moreover, the franchisers have to pay part of their profits to marketing.
Finally, the reading claims that it is more secure to have a franchise because an inexperienced business owner have possibility to start from an already solid model, with a low risk of failure. On the other hand, the professor believes that an alternative to succeed as a first time business owner is to buy an existing business by a previous owner. She holds her opinion by saying that a recent research shows that independent business have twice more chances to survive during the first four years than a franchise.
