The best way to teach is to praise positive actions and ignore negative ones.
The discussion of the issue among individuals and in society as a whole has come into vogue during the last decade. The issue of whether to praise positive actions or igonore similarly negative ones is a complex one, since it involves a conflict concerning what kind of actions they are.
Maslow, one of the most famous psychologists, built the hierarchy of needs indicating which needs are in the first place in a life of human being. Being accepted and praised is the one of these needs requiring to be satisfied primarily. It is a universal rule that when an action is praised, you will continue to conduct this behaviour with great enthusiasism. it will grow harder and harder being an intrinsic part of your nature. For instance, when a child gets a one-hundred from his math exam, it should be praised by his parents to make him continue to study hard to sustain that level. If his parents don`t appraise his success, he will soon lose his zealot to study hard thinking that it is not important to get a higher score. To evaluate and praise a positive action is the key motive to teach someone what is good or not.
On the other hand, ignoring negative actions is a dangerous situation causing someone to think that there is nothing wrong in doing a behaviour which is indecorus or inappropriate according to social or culturel rules. For instance, when a child steals something from a shop and you ignore this action, he will think that to gain something is too easy. Why do i need to try hard to achieve a good job to pay for my needs. However, that is not to say that you have to criticise every wrong action , because when it happens , it may cause a child to lose his confidence and give up trying again. Therefore, you should be very cautous when choosing which action you feel compulsory to ignore or not.
In sum, there is no black and white approach when considering whether to appraise or ignore an action to teach someone what to do. Your judgement should depend on a case-by-case analysis of the situations.
