In 1966 the US residents spent 44% of the money on food, which is about twice as much as they spent on cars. And only 33% of expenditure shares petrol at 9%, furniture at 10%, restraints at 7%, books at 6%, and 1% for computers.
The chart did not change much by 1996. The main spending patterns still were food and cars. In this year Americans spent 45% on cars, while food consumption reduced by 30%, hitting 14% of all budget. Computers became more popular, at 10% compared to 1% spent on books. Restraints became twice occupied, reaching 14%. Spending on furniture and petrol diminished insignificantly by 1-2%.
