The given line graph illustrates the quantity of goods transported by four means of transport namely road, water, rail, pipeline in the given time period from 1974 to 2002. The data has been calibrated in million tonnes.
It is quite evident from the graph that all modes of transport became popular for transporting goods with the increasing years except rail which remained alomst same. In 1974, the goods transported by water and pipeline were 40 million tonnes and 5 million tonnes respectively. After that, from 1978, both the modes of transport followed the same pattern while transporting goods and remained similar till 1990 where the goods transported were 60 million tonnes and nearly 25 million tonnes by same means of transport. It followed by sharp decrease in use of water mode of transport and reached at 30 million tonnes in 1998 whereas quantity of goods tranported by pipeline remained same till the year 2002 where it was 20 million tonnes.
Moving further, quantity of goods transported by rail system was 40 million tonnes in 1974 and it was noticed similar till the year 2002 with minor fluctuations in bwtween. The road system became popular throughout given time period where the goods transported went from 70 million tonnes to nearly about 100 million tonnes at the end of the year 2002.
Overall, it is clear that usage of all modes transport were in increasing trend except rail.
