The chart and table below give information about population figures in Japan.

The charts illustrate data regarding population changes in japan over one hundred and five years between 1950 and 2055.

Overall, while the number of Japanese rose consistently over half of the years shown, it is projected to markedly decrease in the future years. In contrast, the percentage of elderly people is estimated to continue on the increase.

looking more closely at the details, in 1950, both total population and the number of persons over 65 years were at their lowest, at 84.1 million and 4.1 million (4.9% of total population) respectively. From this point, the latter went up steadily during the period, reaching 127.8 million in 2005, which was the highest number recorded. However, figures started to go down gradually over the next ten years and they are expected to see much sharper falls in 2035 (11 million) and 2055 (89.9 million).

If we look at the elderly, there was a near five-fold growth in their population in 2005, at 25.7 million, which was 20% of the total population. this figure is predicted to group in 2035 (34%) and despite a forecast drop by 700 thousand, the proportion of senior citizens of japan is estimated to rise to 41% in 2055.
