The tables below give information about sales of Fairtrade*-labelled coffee and bananas in 1999 and 2004 in five European countries.
The tables provide information about revenues from bananas and coffee for Fair-trade in 5 countries over a 5-year period.
Overall, the most striking feature is coffee revenues increased in all 5 nations, with the UK having the most dramatic climb over the period. Sales for bananas experienced an upward trend, albeit to widely varying degrees, except for Denmark and Sweden which recorded drops in the examined time.
Looking at sales of coffee between 1999 and 2004, the figure for the UK shot up from 1.5 million to 20 million pounds. A less pronounced increase was witnessed in the figure for Switzerland, which doubled to reach 6 million pounds in 2004. In comparison, coffee revenues in Belgium rose by only 0.7 million pounds, which still more than tripled the increment found in Denmark (1.8 - 2 million euros) and Sweden (0.8 - 1 million euros).
Turning to the revenue of bananas in the same period, it is Switzerland which stands out for soaring from 15 million to 47 million euros. Also, the UK and Belgium sales figures both underwent manifold growth (by almost 6 times to hit 5.5 million euros and by around 7 times to reach 4 million euros, respectively). By contrast, banana sales in both Sweden and Denmark followed a different pattern, experiencing noticeable reductions (by 0.8 million euros and 1.1 million euros).
