TPO-52. Integrated Writing Task. Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific points made in the reading passage.

Both the reading and the lecture state the feasibility of establishing colonies of human to live and work on asteroids- rocky and icy objects existing in our solar system- instead of Moon and Mars. The passage points out to three reasons approving the fact that it is the best option. In contrast, the speaker refutes all the notions mentioning the ideas elaborated upon hereunder.

Firstly, the text suggests that low gravity is the result of the smaller size of the asteroids which leads to a safer landing on their surface compared to the Moon and Mars. Moreover, more tools and equipment could be carried to set up the colony. Also, it would be easier to take off again, which means less fuel is required for returning to Earth. On the contrary, the professor claims that low gravity presents certain risks. It causes severe health problem for astronauts since they will lose their muscle mass and bone density.

Secondly, the passage states that while there may be valuable elements in the asteroids, like gold and platinum, it is remarkably profitable for the sponsors to mine these raw materials and send them back to the Earth. The lecturer stands on the other side, indicating that there are additional factors to be considered. High costs of transporting these minerals to the Earth will reduce the profit by increasing the final price. Moreover, the extra supply of precious elements in the market will result in a significant drop in market price, which means less profit.

Finally, the reading asserts that as some asteroids come closer to Earth's orbit than our Moon in specific intervals, they are easy to reach and would be more affordable to fetch to than a planet like Mars. The listening refuses the notion, mentions that the paths in which asteroid orbit around the Earth can be unusual. They can come close to Earth and then move further than Mars. Thus, traveling a distance further than Mars for the trip back to Earth would be irrational and unreasonable.
