OG2 - professors appearance in TV programs and its outcomes.
Both the reading and the speaking state about the appearance of professors on TV programs and its consequences for the people, universities, and themselves. While the passage brings three reasons to support the benefits of their appearances on TV, the lecturer claims that it is not suitable for professors to attend these programs.
Firstly, the text mentions that professors need to be prominent among a broader range of audience. While they are in the campus, their reputation is limited to other scholars working in universities, but with appearing in TV shows, thousands of people become aware of their notions which leads to a more significant impact on society. In contrast, the professor suggests that the professors tend to get a reputation among other scholars and appearing in TV programs creates a blurry perspective out of them showing a person who prefers entertainment rather than research and being a serious scholar. Thus, gathering academic funds will become a severe problem for them.
Secondly, the passage indicates that when people get to know a knowledgable faculty member of a specific university on TV, gradually the prominence of that university will be enhanced among the public, and the university will benefit from more donations. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes the claim, asserting that taking part in TV programs needs spending lots of time ob rehearsing, traveling to the TV studio and even trying to look good other than spending time on campus, doing research, business and being with students. In this regard, universities will not benefit from the appearance of the professors on TV.
Finally, the reading points out that when professors share their views on TV, they give the viewers the chance of learning more about issues deeply. Moreover, their appearance leads to a new taste of real insight and expertise for the audience. The listening refuses the idea, stating that there are lots of knowledge to show on TV, and they don't incline to probe issues deeply. In this regard, the professors have to investigate the events as they are not complicated so that the views and thoughts are not much different from a university homework.
