TPO-49 - Integrated Writing Task Like many creatures, humpback whales migrate long distances for feeding and mating purposes. How animals manage to migrate long distances is often puzzling. In the case of humpback whales, we may have found the answer: the
The passage discusses that there is a possibility that humpback whales use stars to navigate themselves during their meigration. Also, the text provides three reasons to support this theory. In contrast, the professor rejects all the mentioned reasons in the text and explains these reasons are not convincing.
First, the reading claims that because whales seem very clever, so they can use stars to navigate. However, the professor rebuts this idea by explaining that there is no corrolation between being inteligent and using stars, and it is not a scientific evidence. For example, among birds there is a kind that use stars to navigate and this bird is not very smart. As a result, the reason in the passage is not a firm reason.
Second, the article states that whales migrate in straight lines and because there is no landscapes in open ocean there must be other things that help them during their migration and it is stars. In cintrast, the professor rejects this reason, again. Consequently, she explains that whales using a unique characteristic related to the earth's magnetic field to find their waus in vast oceans.
Third, the text describes that whales show z unusual behavior. This behavior is called spy-hopping. Also, this is very rare between marine animals. So, the passage says that whales using this behavior to navigate by looking at stars. While the professor explains that these bahavior is observed in sharks, too. So, we can not conclude that this behaviour is concerned with navigating by stars.
