Both the reading and listening parts offer two opposite views on the effectiveness of cloud seeding. While the passage presents some clues that cloud seeding can be effective for the reduction of damage caused by hail, the professor lists the contradictory to these specific clues and presents some facts which call those clues into the questions.
First of all, the text mentioned to the effectiveness of cloud seeding in the laboratory experiments, which prevents the formation hail and converts it to the snow, and concluded that the same event could be repeated in nature. However, the lecturer casts doubt on the accuracy of this conclusion. As she asserts, the silver iodide does work differently in nature; furthermore, it prevents any types of precipitation. In so doing, by cloud seeding in nature, there will be no snow, rain, and hail. Consequently, by the cloud seeding, plants and crops will face another severe problem of drought and lack of water.
Secondly, meanwhile, the reading section refers to the effectiveness of cloud seeding in some countries of Asia as evidence of its impact's validity, the instructor, on the other hand, denies this piece of evidence too. As she posits, since this event happens in the urban areas of Asian countries, it will not work identically in the farmlands of the United States. According to the lecturer, the air pollution of the urban area is helpful in the prevention of hail's formation; however, the seeding cloud is aimed to be used in the agriculture lands which is unpolluted. Therefore, there is no warranty the same reaction will be duplicated in the farmlands too.
Finally, the passage gives examples of some local studies which the cloud seeding was effective. On the contrast, the rejects its accuracy too. As she explains, the reduction of hail on that period occurred simultaneously in some neighborhood areas such as the north, south, and east where do not use the cloud seeding effect. Thus, this reduction of hail precipitation has occurred for the sake of natural variation of local weather rather than could seeding.
