The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The given chart depicts the comparison of families between owned and leased accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.

Overall, during the first half of the period, the percentage of households renting accommodation was much higher than that of those owning their home. However, 1971 was a real game changer when an opposite trend was observed in the next 30 years (1917 - 2011).

Looking at the chart in more details, in 1918, families in rented accommodation accounted for more than 75%, triple that of those in rented places. This figure dropped dramatically to 50% in 1971 despite a period of stability from 1939 to 1953. By contrast, the proportion of households owning accommodation doubled appreciably, with the figure standing at just under 25% in 1918, remaining stable at around between 1939 and 1961, before rising to equal to those in rented accommodation.

From 1981 to 2011, households in owned accommodation continued its rising trends and reached a peak of nearly 70% before dropping by 5% in 2011. On the other hand, the proportion of tenants saw a different pattern when experiencing a gradual decline to just above 30%, followed by a small increase by 5% in 2011.
