The critical problem is that a particular species of trees, Torreya, is facing a decline of its population in these years. The author suggests three possible solutions against the decline of Torreya; in contrast, the lecturer casts serious doubts on all of the recovering methods since she believes that none of them are convincing or practical.
On the first place, the reading passage suggests that the declination of Torreya could be eliminated by re-establishing this species in its original living area, Northern Florida. The microclimate in Northern Florida is supposed to be cooler which is suitable for Torreya to have thrived over thousands of years. The professor, in the opposite, claims that the temperature in this specific area is affected by the larger area as well as global warming result in the increase in temperature and also wetland becomes dry. Torreya has limited possibility to survive without the essential microclimate.
The author also provides another view of points that Torreya could be relocated into a further north space. The local cooling weather there is favorable for Torreya. However, the professor seriously argues this argument that migration assisted by humankind because of a previous unexpected example. A once-endangered kind of trees, black lock tree, have been migrated by people and been thriving out of control due to no natural enemies in the new place. More worst, the uncontrollable spread finally threatens native species which of themselves were already endangered. The dangers of unpredictable outcomes caused by human-assisted migration outnumber the benefits.
Finally, the reading passage proposed a solution which scientists can plant Torreya carefully in research centers and monitor them. Nonetheless, the professor contends that the population of Torreya limited by the scale of the research centers does not have enough capacity to protect Torreya from the diseases. Torreya must maintain its high genetic diversity directly related to the number of individuals to resist the diseases.
