The reading passage and listening material both are talking about the reduction of the yellow cedar population in northwestern North America. And the reading suggests three possible reasons for this reduction. While the lecturer claims that these reasons are not advocating and he argues against each of them.
To begin with, the writer makes the point that, insects especially the cedar dark beetle are responsible. These insects attack cedar trees and their larvae eat the wood. In contrast, the professor holds a different point of view, he states that cedar trees are one of the most resistance trees against the beetles. Also, cedar barks have powerful chemicals that are poisonous to beetles, so beetles can't attack cedar trees.
In addition, the reading passage claims that maybe brown bears are causing the reduction. These bears eat cedar trees bark which contains sugar. However, the professor refutes this point by saying that maybe bears harm some trees but they couldn't damage all of them. Also, cedar trees are declining all over northwestern North America, both in the mainland and islands, but there are no bears in the islands. Therefore brown bears couldn't cause this reduction.
Finally, the reading and listening both are discussing the role of gradual changes of climate. While the reading passage asserts that these changes affected the root system of cedar trees and exposed them to freezing temperatures in the locations with high elevations. The professor says that it's true that roots have become sensitive, but more trees are dying in the lower elevations where the temperature is higher than higher elevations. If freezing is the reason for this phenomenon, trees must be dying in the higher elevations.
