The reading states that ethanol fuel, which is made from plants such as corn and sugar cane, is not a good replacement for gasoline based on three main reasons. However, the lecture claims that those reasons are not convincing and opposes each reason.
First, the article says that using ethanol will not help to reduce carbon dioxide which causes the global warming environmental problem. The professor refutes this point by explaining that in fact, growing plant for producing ethanol will be a great help to reduce carbon dioxide in the environment because the plants have the role of absorbing carbon dioxide. Therefore, using ethanol instead of gasoline will really help to decrease global warming.
Second, the reading says that the production of ethanol would dramatically reduce the number of plants which are a food source of animals. The professor opposes this opinion as well. She states that ethanol can be produced by unusable parts of plants such as leaves, roots, etc. which are not eaten by animals. So it will not affect their source of food as mentioned.
Third, the article also claims that ethanol can not compete with gasoline on price without the subsidy of government. The professor strongly refutes this point by proving that if there are more and more people buying ethanol leading to the increase of ethanol production, the price to produce ethanol will be decreased for sure. She also adds that now the capacity of producing ethanol has increased three times and the price has decreased by 40% than before.
Therefore, the professor successfully opposes the idea that ethanol fuel is not a good replacement for gasoline of the passage.
