Many scientists believe it would be possible to maintain a permanent human presence on Mars or the Moon. On the other hand, conditions on Venus are so extreme and inhospitable that maintaining a human presence there would be impossible.
First, atmospheric pressure at Venus’ surface is at least 90 times greater than the pressure at Earth’s surface This means that a force of 100 kilograms is pressing down on every square centimeter of surface All spacecraft that have landed on Venus have been crushed by this extreme pressure within an hour of landing. Almost anything humans might land on Venus would be crushed as well.
Second, as far as we know, there are no reservoirs of water on Venus' surface, and the planet's atmosphere, made up mostly of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and sulfuric acid, contains hardly any oxygen or water vapor Water and oxygen would therefore probably have to be supplied to Venus from Earth. The idea of ensuring a regular supply of water and oxygen from Earth is impractical in the extreme and would probably defeat the purpose of establishing a permanent station on Venus.
Third, very little sunlight reaches the planet's surface. About 60 percent of the sunlight that hits Venus is reflected back into space by the thick clouds that fill the atmosphere, which means that only 40 percent of the sunlight can get through the clouds Below these clouds is a dense layer of carbon dioxide, which blocks even more light, so very little light reaches the surface. The lack of light would prevent the use of solar power cells, so humans could not get electricity to power their machines and equipment.
The passage discusses the possibility for human to land on Venus and considers it very low.It also provides number of reasons in order to support this opinion. The professor, However, does not agree with such statement and tends to oppose each of the proposed reasons to show that even though it might involve challenges, it is totally possible for the human to take its spacecraft to the Venus. In the following we point out to each of the opinions stated by the reading and professors oppositions.
First, the passage suggests that because of the extremely high pressure on the Venus surface, it is totally impractical to go there without being crushed in an hour-long landing.The professor refutes this claim by explaining that rather than landing on the surface of the Venus, we can manage to be suspended in the fifty kilometer above the surface. That way, the applied pressure on the space craft could be diminished down to pressure we bear on earth.
Second, the reading explains that it is not feasible to access any form of water on the Venus. For the atmosphere is mostly made of carbon dioxide , nitrogen and sulfuric acid and so oxygen and water vapor has to be taken there from earth which is not possible at all. In contrary professor explains that the needed water can easily be obtained from the existing compounds in the atmosphere and thats not a problem.
Lastly, the passage points out to fact that the amount of sunlight received on the Venus surface is far below the required amount because of the reflections done by the surrounding thick clouds, in this regard, the lack of solar power for the machines would be a serious issue. The professor once more contradicts this by explaining that with the suggested "suspension rather than landing" theory, this problem also can be overcome, since by locating in that hight, not only the sun light from above but also the reflections from below can be used as an ultimate solar power.
