THE BANK, THE WOMAN AND THE PSYCHIATRIST
"Good morning ladies and gentlemen, I hereby submit this proposal which would further foister the the already established public image of our dear company. I am suggesting that the Guaranty Trust bank(GTB), Lekki penninsula branch employ the notable psychiatrist, Professor Owoeye O.A, a senior consultant at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba. He will be employed to visit the bank on occasional bases..."
This is the opening remark of the Chief Executive Officer of GTB in Africa's most populous nation, Nigeria. The bank is arguably the most popular among the teeming youths of the nation, especially, University students.
The prompt of this examination simply wants us to establish the reason why a company will hire consultants that would enhance their operation, make them work more efficienly. We can decode this message by referring to the introduction above.
One day, an old woman, in her 60's decided to close down her account details in the bank. She want to do this in order to receive a sum of 2.5 million naira in cash. Then and there, she was denied of this because the bank will lose their place in the stock market and possibly be delisted by the Central Bank of Nigeria, headed by the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele. The woman remain calm until it became unbearable. With a medical history of Bipolar disorder, she started eliciting manic symptoms. At this point, Prof. Owoeye entered the banking hall and he not only prescribed I.M haldol 10mg stat and I.V diazepam 20mg stat, he encourage the bank to contact her family right away. The woman never recovered from the manic symptoms. Today, she is labelled "pharmacobaddest" by the street urchins.
This story is cogent to the prompt at hand. We can learn three things. Firstly, the bank was right to employ the psychiatrist. Had it been that they did not do that, they would have mistook the woman for another customer who is lousy and only wants to be showy. The psychiatrist saved the day, he ensured that the woman is stablised with the above prescription. However, one may argue that he went to the extreme by advising the bank to contact her family. The family members knows that she was a psychiatric patient, hence, they consent to the advice that the woman be admitted into Federal Neuro-psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos. At the hospital emergency, patients spend only three days, however, since she has a file there, she was admitted directly into one of the female wards. She, however escaped and later became what the street urchins know her for.
In addition, we can also infer from the story that, the bank was wrong to employ Dr Owoeye. The bank staffs might have resolved the matter before the arrival of the psychiatrist. Had it been that attended to the request of the woman, she might have left the premise peacefully before the arrival of Dr Owoeye. Hence, banks should not only protect their image to the public, but also protect the rights of their customers. Companies, generally should ensure that they put the patient right first. Had it been the customer at the bank is an eighteen year-old and a prosp, they would have been in big trouble.
