Both the reading passage and lecture are discussing using the electronic medical record system in which information is stored in electronic databases instead of paper records. The author of the reading passage gives three main reasons why this system would be beneficial for patients, physicians, and researchers. The lecturer, on the other hand, believes the mentioned points in favor of electronic systems are not certain and strong enough and refutes all three episodes of arguments stated by the author.
First of all, the author brings up the idea that by using electronic systems the costs would be reduced significantly since paper records need a huge amount of space for storage and transferring and duplicating paper records is costly. However, by using electronic medical record systems doctors can easily get access to datasets and transfer them and it also doesn't require much space. The lecturer, by contrast, rebuts the assertion by saying that the cost-saving is not significant since physicians use paper records as an emergency backup even after adaptation of the electronic system. He also mentions that paper records have signatures that are needed for legal reasons.
Secondly, the author holds the view that electronic record systems prevent errors arise from illegible handwriting and improper transcription. The lecturer, however, contradicts this notion, explaining even after the adoption of electronic systems physicians still use pen and paper for examining the patients and writing prescriptions. Since the office staff should enter the information from the handwritten document to the electronic system those errors would not be eliminated.
Thirdly, the author claims that electronic record systems provide a good opportunity for medical researchers to easily get access to medical databases. It is very demanding and expensive to manually search between thousands of patients' paper record stored in an office. The lecturer, however, refutes the author's claim explaining that getting access to the medical databases require following strict privacy rules and obtaining many permissions also from patients and these permissions are not always guaranteed as patients can block any access to their medical information.
