The passage makes a point on American wood companies would refuse to buy the eco-certification for several reasons. The professor, on the other hand, argued that it will likely that many of those companies, actually, do buy the eco-certificate, and he gives his own points of views.
Firstly, the author of the passage assumes consumer ignorance about eco-certificate, because advertising is the main attraction to buy the product for virtually every American consumers. The lecturer, however, states the abundance of eco-minded people who aware of protecting the environment would favor buying eco-certificated products since those companies are trustworthy.
Secondly, the reading passage makes an assertion on the prices of eco-certificated products to be higher than uncertificated ones, with together, American consumers' tendency to buying cheaper products, it is unlikely for companies to earn eco-certification. In contrast, the professor disproves the hypothesis that constructed in the passage by providing the results of a study on customer preference of choosing the same product from different companies. Since the study shows that if the difference in price between the two products is as small as 5%, the price is not an essential factor, indeed, value regards environment-friendly products.
Thirdly, according to the author, since American wood companies sell most of their products in the United States rather than abroad, where eco-certification is important, USA originated companies don't have to buy the eco-certificate to keep up with others. The professor, meanwhile, casts doubts on eco-minded American customers whose attention is drawn by international companies because of eco-certification. Therefore, American wood companies, without eco-certification, cannot profit from the market.
