There were varied onions about whether to allow or not the television advertisements related to children, especially those aged between two to five. If I were asked, I would definitely disagree with the blanket ban opinion of completely not allowing such commercials. I feel so mainly because of two reasons which will be discussed in the subsequent paragraphs.
Firstly, we can all agree that those commercials will also be watched by parents of kids. Such commercials are really informative, by providing them a platform to help know what types of different products are present in the market for their children. Drawing from my own experience, my uncle aunt have a kid aged 4 years. He is immensely drawn towards using a smart phone and really stubborn, but naturally they were really reluctant to give him the smartphone since there were afraid of the bad things in it. Fortunately one day, while watching TV, they came across this advertisement of a product which talks about a smart phone look alike product but not really a smart phone, specially designed for kids. This smart phone when used by a kid gives them a feeling that they were indeed using a real smart phone but in reality it will not have features of it like internet, camera etc. However, it was successful in positively fooling the kids for good and making them use it. However, they get bored of it since it does not have any features, which means bored of smart phones as a whole, eventually leading to abandoning ‘smart phones’. The advertisement was tactfully designed, however, in making this fact obscure to kids, but at the same time, obvious for parents.
Second, it was true that kids will be easily influenced by anything, especially TV and advertisements, eventually making them do bad things. However, as my personal opinion stands, it is not very difficult for parents to exercise discretion mainly in case of kids in age band of two to five and making them watch only good things. My personal experience is a compelling example for this. During my childhood, I used to watch lot of TV and so did my younger brother who was 4 at that time. But when my parents have clearly instructed me to keep him from watching potentially influencing advertisements and other programs. We were really successful in it since we were able to switch off TV or change the channel during such things without him saying anything. Of course, it was definitely not possible always to do this but it was nevertheless sufficient.
To sum up, in the light of aforementioned reasons and instances discussed, I feel that there is no need to naively ban all the advertisements which seem to direct towards kids because that way we might also lose the informative ones and additionally, it is not difficult these days, to control what kids watch on TV.
