TOEFL integrated writing: Dutch painter Rembrandt

The reading and the lecture are both about the painting "Portrait of an Elderly Woman White Bonnet" which has been attributed as a work of Rembrandt under doubt. The author of the reading believes that the problems associated with the painting suggests that it is not his work. The lecturer undermines the claims made by the author. She is of the opinion that a thorough examination of this painting proves that it has the attributes of Rembrandt displayed in his paintings.

To begin with, author argues that this painting is inconsistent in the way it has created the woman. The article mentions that the woman has wore a white linen cap usually used by servants and a luxurious coat which is not affordable for a servant creating a doubt. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that the painting has been reconstructed to make it luxurious on top of the original work. That has created the doubt of inconsistency presented in the article.

Secondly, the writer suggests that in the painting the light and shadow do not fit together as displayed in his previous work. It is also said that Rembrandt would not have made such an error as one of the exceptional painters of his time. This argument is rebutted by the lecturer. She elaborates on the point that in the original painting, there was a light colored coat that illuminated part of the face of the women showing the realistic feature of the light shadows.

Finally, the author posits that Rembrandt has used only a single sheet of wood in most of his creations. Moreover, it is stated that in this specific painting there are several pieces of wood glued together in the panel. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is that these wood pieces were glued later to enlarge the painting to make it grand after several years. Additionally, he also notes that the wood used in this panel is from the same tree as one of Rembrandt’s other paintings. With these counter arguments, professor tries to convince that this art was originally created by Rembrandt.
