The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
The bar chart illustrates the proportion of families in terms of owning and renting accommodation in England and Wales over the period of 93 years.
It is noticeable that the percentage of households in rented accommodation was higher than that of those in owned accommodation during the first half of the period, while there was an opposite trend in the last 40 years.
In 1918, the proportion families renting accommodation accounted for just over 75%, which was triple that of those in owned accommodation. After the period of stability from 1939 to 1953, this figure went down dramatically to 50% in 1971. By contrast, despite standing at just under 25% in 1918, the percentage of households in owned accommodation experienced a gradual increase with 30% in 1939 and remained constantly in the following years before reaching an equal point of those in rented accommodation in 1971.
From 1971 to 2001, the percentage of families owning accommodation continued its rising trend to reach a peak of nearly 70% before declining by 5% in 2011. The percentage of households in rented accommodation saw a different pattern with numbers going down to just above 30% in 2011, followed by a small increase of 5% in 2011.
