Overall, there were 2 opposite trends in the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in england and wales over the period of 93 years. In 1971, the figures of households owning and renting accommodation were the same.

In 1918, nearly 80% of households in rented accommodation, which was higher than that of households in owning with just over 20%. while the proportion of households in owned accommodation in england and wales tended to increase, the figure for households in rented accommodation decreased. In 1971, they reached equal proportion, at 50%.

From 1971 onwards, households in rented and owned accommodation in england and wales continued to remain their opposite trends. Finally,in 2011, the percentage of household renting accommodation dropped to 36% while that of households owning accommodation was approximately double with 64%
