The passage and the lecture discuss the benefits of high taxes that governments set on some unhealthy products like a cigarette. The reading presents three reasons why setting high taxes for these unhealthy behaviors is a good idea. Whereas, the professor in the lecture challenges all of them and believes none of them is convincing.
First, the reading claims a high amount of taxes will discourage people from smoking cigarettes and eating unhealthy food. However, the lecture argues against this opinion. She points out that high taxes would lead people to buy cheaper low-quality things that will have greater health risks.
Second, the passage states these kinds of taxes are financially fair because people who use cigarettes and unhealthy foods would get sick and they will create medical costs. However, the lecturer disagrees with this idea. She believes fairness doesn't define in that way and setting high taxes isn't fair at all. According to the lecture, this isn't fair at all that people with lower incomes pay the same amount of taxes that people with higher incomes pay.
Finally, the reading claims the high rate of taxation on cigarettes would significantly increase the revenue of the governments. However, the professor in the lecture refutes this idea completely because these high amounts of money will make the governments greatly dependent. Thus, the governments that wait for that amount of money each month would set some rules that ban smoking in some public areas like parks and other public centers.
Although the letter presents three reasons why setting high taxes on some unhealthy products like a cigarette is a good idea, the professor challenges all of them and explains why none of them are convincing.
